As a relative new bowler, playing bowls for two years, my perception is that there are a lack of structured and planned coaching systems at club level where beginners can develop and learn the finer skills of the game. Unless you are already one of the top bowlers of your club, you also don't have mutch opportunity to learn from the experience bowlers because they seldom play tabs in or are involved in coaching. As one 'coach' say to me " if you want to be a coach then you must now your own game will deteriorate, beacause you dont have mutch time for yourself to practice"

The solution for me, as in most other sports codes, is that we move to an era of professional coaches, were coaches are paid for their service and time and the achievements of their learners/teams is also their achievements.

We as bowlers can also use this forum to share coaching tips and learn some trade secrets from the experiece bowlers.
Hey Meir,

I agree with you. Having left rugby and taken up bowls, I found it quite unusual to not have dedicated coaches or scheduled practices. You're left to your own devices a bit in the beginning. To the credit of my club, the Chairman took time to give me a lesson quite early on and taught me the fundamentals of a good bowls delivery, which was invaluable.

Moving to a system where each club has a coach who leads a practice twice a week would definitely help novice bowlers and I'm sure experienced bowlers would benefit as well. I suppose costs are an issue for most clubs but I think it should be looked at within the context of a business model.
Hey guys - don't know what district you are in? Up here coaching with regulated practice sessions are quite (not at all Clubs, but the Coaches Standing Committee are beginning to make inroads into Clubs to get players excited about coaching) popular. Most of these sessions are based on the old BSA Talent Identification circuit which makes it fun to do and really easy to start challenges between competitive players! If you do have a coach at your club, put them in touch with me!

Good stuff, we also fall under CGBA, with Morningside. I've since received a mailer from our club notifying us that there will be practice sessions twice a week in preparation for league.

As far as I know, Peter Storey will be in charge of those practice sessions, which is great!!
